Liu
Mingliang
Liu Mingliang is a rare figure in the contemporary art world who seamlessly bridges the gap between deep academic theory and exquisite ceramic craftsmanship. As a Professor at the Shandong University of Arts and a celebrated "Taishan Scholar," his work represents the pinnacle of the "New Literati" ceramic movement.
Born in 1972 in Qihe, Shandong Province, Liu pursued his artistic journey with rigorous intellectual discipline. He holds a Ph.D. in Literature (Art History) from Southeast University, a background that infuses his ceramic creations with profound historical and philosophical depth. Unlike artisans who focus solely on technique, Liu approaches ceramics as a scholar.
"Reviving the spirit of the Song Dynasty with a contemporary philosophical voice."
His artistic practice focuses on the "Freehand Brushwork" (Xieyi) spirit in ceramic art. He advocates for a return to the naturalness and spontaneity found in traditional Chinese aesthetics, yet interpreted through a modern lens. His theoretical framework regarding the "Contemporary Official Kiln" and the aesthetic boundaries of ceramic art has influenced a generation of students and artists.
Liu's works often feature elegant forms adorned with fluid, expressive calligraphy or painting, embodying the Taoist principle of "Wu Wei" (effortless action). His pieces have been exhibited in major national exhibitions and are collected by institutions such as the National Art Museum of China, symbolizing a dialogue between the clay of the earth and the spirit of the scholar.
